| Not only
is Martha C. Carlough, M.D., MPH '85 a board certified family
physician, fellowship trained in obstetrics, but she is also
a humanitarian, serving in Nepal as the reproductive health
consultant for Interserve/United Mission to Nepal.
In 1995, Martha moved to Nepal where she continues to practice
both clinical medicine and community health. After an 18-month
extended home assignment in the United States, Martha returned
to Nepal in January 2002. She spends one day a week in direct
clinical care at Patan Hospital. The rest of her time is devoted
to public health and planning initiatives towards improving
the situation for women in Nepal - a country where one in
32 women still die in childbirth.
For the next two years, Martha will divide her time between
Nepal and the U.S., spending nine months in Nepal and three
months in the U.S., working with the University of North Carolina's
Department of Family Medicine.
After receiving her bachelor's degree, Martha went on to
earn her doctorate of medicine from Jefferson Medical College.
She completed a fellowship at Brown University's Department
of Family Medicine and received a master's of public health
from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Martha is also a member of the Delta Omega - Theta Chapter
of the National Public Health Honor Society.
