Hess, M.D. '78 is a member of the orthopedic surgery department
at Geisinger Medical Center, and chief of its back and spine
section. However, through the years his humanitarian efforts
have been at the forefront of his work.
While on a missionary trip to Quenca, Equador, Fred performed
a 16-hour scoliosis surgery on a young Equadorian girl. He
cared for a young boy from Bihac, Bosnia, who was brought
to Geisinger Medical Center for the treatment of injuries
sustained when a rocket grenade exploded in his backyard.
Fred made a trip with his family to Leogone, Haiti to distribute
food and clothing to needy families. And, he cared for a 10-year-old
girl from Honduras who needed surgery for scoliosis.
In addition to his work as a humanitarian, Fred co-authored
"Safety of the Pedicle in Pediatric Patients with Spinal
Disorders." He was also recognized for his community
spirit when he was asked to carry the torch for the 2002 Winter
Olympic Games in a one-mile relay in Philadelphia last February.
After Fred earned his bachelor's degree he went on to receive
his doctorate of medicine from the University of Southern
Florida. He is also a member of several professional organizations
including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and
the Hamilin Society, a select group of orthopedic surgeons.
