READING, Pa. - In the first round of the 2009 ECAC Women’s Basketball South Region tournament, the eighth seed Eagles of Juniata College (16-11) upset the number one seed Lady Lions (17-10) by the final score of 77-56 Wednesday evening in the Bollman Center. Leading the Eagles to the upset victory was Claudia McDowell who scored a game high 22 points. She was joined by teammates Kelly Ashcraft (16 pts) and Kelly Rotan (13 pts). For the host Lions, senior Charlotte Ciccone (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) recorded a team high 13 points. Classmate Bre Dillon (Feasterville, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) ended her career at Albright with a 12 point showing. Junior Mallory Olsheski (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) earned her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Albright looked to get back on the winning track in this year’s ECAC tournament, following a tough semi-final loss a week ago. At Right: Charlotte Ciccone recorded a game high 13 points against Juniata College The two teams remained close throughout the first 10 minutes of the contest. However, with a quick 12-4 run in favor of the visitors, Albright fell into a 12 point hole. The red and white tried to battle back throughout the final moments of the first half. They eventually closed out the first half down by four (32-36). Following the halftime break, Juniata exploded on the scoreboard with another quick offensive surge. In just the first four minutes, the Eagles took their second 12 point lead of the night. That lead would then double within the final minute of play. The Albright offense that had been so explosive throughout the season, struggled greatly in the second half shooting just 24 percent. Juniata’s second half performance consisted of a 72.7 percent showing from the field. Wednesday’s contest marked the final game in the careers of Ciccone, Dillon, and Annie McMahon (Havertown, PA/Haverford). McMahon did not play against the Eagles due to a broken nose which she suffered in last week’s semi-final game against Lebanon Valley. Juniata will next face Alvernia University on Saturday in the semi-final round of this year’s tournament. Both semi-final games as well as the championship will be played this weekend at the highest remaining seed.
