2008 Albright College Men's Tennis Match Results


April 26, 2008: MASCAC Flighted Tournament

Kingston, PA - Albright competed in the MASCAC Individual flighted Tournament Saturday in Kingston, PA.  Senior Phil Bobbitt and junior Yoshi Otsuka both advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective flights to lead the day for the Lions.  Bobbitt, playing in the #5 singles flight, defeated Arcadia’s Mike Catalano 6-3, 7-5, in first-round play to advance to the quarterfinals.  In the quarters Bobbitt fell to Lebanon Valley’s Jon Gingrich 6-3, 6-1.  Otsuka captured a tough first-round victory in the #2 singles flight against Arcadia’s Danny Ly.  Ly won the opening set 6-2, but Otsuka rallied to win set number two 6-2, then won the match with a 10-6 win in the super tiebreaker.  Unfortunately for Otsuka, he was matched with eventual champion Jonathan Siemen in the quarterfinal, and Sieman came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win.  Senior David Scherler lost a tough opening match in the #1 singles flight, falling 7-6, 6-4 to Adam Geiger of FDU-Florham.  Freshman Kevin Gauby and freshman Jason Lefkoe both lost their opening matches in the #3 and #4 singles flights as well. 


April 22, 2008: Wilkes 9, Albright 0

Wilkes-Barre, PA - Albright fell to Wilkes 9-0 in the final match of the year for the Lions.  Albright closes the 2008 season with a record of 1-11.  The Lions struggled against the Freedom Conference champion Colonels, who improved to 16-2 this season.  Wilkes swept doubles play while dropping only one game, then had similar success in singles action to complete the 9-0 sweep.  Albright will close the spring season at the MASCAC Individual flighted championships Saturday inWilkes-Barre.


April 15, 2008: DeSales 7, Albright 2 Box Score

Reading, PA - Yoshi Otsuka won in both singles and doubles action Tuesday afternoon, but it was not enough for the Lions as DeSales came away with a 7-2 win. The loss drops Albright to 1-10 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 2-8.

Otsuka teamed up with David Scherler to take an 8-4 win at #1 doubles for the Lions. Both the #2 and #3 doubles matches were tightly contested., but DeSales was able to prevail both times to hold a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Otsuka rolled in his #2 singles match, winning in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1. Albright was right in the match, but just like the doubles matches, DeSales was able to prevail in a few close matches to win the overall contest. Jason Lefkoe lost 6-2, 4-6, 5-10 at #4 singles, and fell 2-6, 6-2, 9-11 at #5 singles as DeSales hung on for the win.


April 14, 2008: PSU-Harrisburg 9, Albright 0 Box Score

Harrisburg, PA - Albright fell to Penn State Harrisburg by a score of 9-0 in a non-conference match in Harrisburg Monday afternoon.  The Lions are now 1-9 on the season.  David Scherler had the best chance for a team point for the Lions, as he won the first set of his #1 singles match 7-5.  Scherler dropped a tough second set 6-4, sending the match to a race to 10 tiebreaker.  The Lion senior fell 10-3 in the tiebreaker to bring a disappointing to a great match.  Penn State Harrisburg won the remaining singles matches in straight sets, and also collected wins in the three doubles contests to complete the sweep for the day.


April 12, 2008: Lycoming 9, Albright 0 Box Score

Williamsport, PA - Albright lost to Lycoming 9-0 Saturday afternoon, falling to 1-8 on the season and 0-4 in Commonwealth Conference play. Albright nearly picked up a point in doubles play, as the #2 team of Phil Bobbitt and Jason Lefkoe battled throughout their match before falling 9-7. In singles action, Yoshi Otsuka won the first set of his #2 singles match 6-3, but dropped the second set by an identical 6-3 score. The match went to a race to 10 tiebreaker, which saw Alex Beattie top Otsuka by the slimmest of margins at 10-8. That would be as close as the Lions would get to a point on the afternoon as Lycoming swept the remaining matches for its first conference win of the season.


April 9, 2008: Lebanon Valley 9, Albright 0 Box Score

Reading, PA - Albright dropped a 9-0 decision to Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth Conference match up Wednesday afternoon. The loss puts the Lions at 0-3 in conference play and 1-7 overall, while LVC improves to 8-7, 2-2.

David Scherler and Yoshi Otsuka battled in their #1 doubles match but came up on the short end of an 8-4 loss. LVC would capture the other two doubles matches as well to take a 3-0 lead. The Dutchmen went on to win all six singles matches in straigh sets to complete the 9-0 win.


April 7, 2008: Ursinus 7, Albright 2 Box Score

Reading, PA - Senior David Scherler won both his singles and doubles matches Monday afternoon, but it was not enough for the Lions as they fell to Ursinus 7-2 in non-conference action. Scherler and Yoshi Otsuka teamed up to take an 8-1 win at #1 doubles for Albright, but the Bears were victorious at both #2 and #3 doubles to take a 2-1 edge in the match heading to singles play. Scherler was had to come from behind to win his #1 singles match, as he dropped the first set 4-6. He rallied to win the second set 6-2 to force a race to 10 tiebreaker, which he won 10-6 to win the match. That would be the last point of the day for Albright, however, as Ursinus won the final five singles matches to close out the 7-2 win.


April 4, 2008: Elizabethtown 9, Albright 0 Box Score

Reading, PA - Albright fell to 0-2 in Commonwealth Conference play after a 9-0 loss to Elizabethtown Friday afternoon. The match was played indoors in the LifeSports Center due to inclement weather in Reading. Elizabethtown won all three doubles contests to start the match, taking two of the three without dropping a single game. Singles play was no better for Albright, as the Blue Jays won all six matches without surrendering a single set.


April 3, 2008: Albright 8, Immaculata 1 Box Score

Reading, PA - Albright notched its first win of 2008 with an 8-1 defeat of Immaculata Thursday afternoon. The Lions are now 1-4 on the season, while the Macs fall to 0-3. The Lions got off to a good start by taking two of three doubles contests for an early lead. David Scherler and Yoshi Otsuka captured an 8-3 win at #1 doubles, and Kevin Gauby and Phil Bobbitt were nearly perfect in an 8-0 win at #2 doubles. Albright carried the momentum into singles play, as the Lions swept all six matches without surrendering a single set. Scherler won a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 match at #1 singles, while Otsuka was victorious 6-3, 6-3 at #2. Gauby took a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #3, and Jason Lefkoe won 6-3, 6-4 at #4. Bobbitt routed his opponent 6-1, 6-0 at #5, and Jonathan Hong completed the sweep with a 10-5 pro-set win at #6.


March 31, 2008: King's9, Albright 0 Box Score

Reading, PA - Albright lost to King's 9-0 Monday afternoon in a non-conference match.  The match was moved into the LifeSports Center due to the rain.  The Lions dropped two doubles matches to start things off, as the teams of David Scherler/Phil Bobbitt and Kevin Gauby/Jason Lefkoe both fell 8-4.  King's swept singles play as well to complete the 9-0 victory.  Bobbitt had a strong match at #4 singles before falling 6-4, 7-5.  Scherler lost a tough first set in his match 7-5, before dropping the second set 6-0. 


March 29, 2008: Messiah 8, Albright 1 Box Score

Grantham, PA - Albright dropped its conference opener to Messiah by a score of 8-1 Saturday afternoon in Grantham. Albright's lone team point came at #6 singles, where Marko Buvka captured a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Luke Roushe.  Messiah swept all three doubles matches, and took the other five singles contests as well for the final 8-1 tally.


March 25, 2008: Penn State Berks 9, Albright 0 Box Score

Reading, PA - Albright fell to 0-2 on the season after a 9-0 loss to Penn State Berks on Wednesday. Things started out badly for the Lions, as Penn State Berks swept all three doubles matches. Singles play was not any kinder to the Lions, as the visitors took all six matches without dropping a set.

Albright opens conference play with a match against Messiah on Saturday.


March 25, 2008: Alvernia 9, Albright 0 Box Score

Reading, PA- Albright opened the 2008 season with a 9-0 non-conference loss to Alvernia Tuesday afternoon. Alvernia (2-2) swept doubles play to open the match, then went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets. David Scherler put up a strong fight at first singles before falling 6-3, 7-5. Fellow senior Phil Bobbitt also gave his opponent a good run, but came up on the short end of a 6-2, 7-5 score.

The Lions return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Penn State Berks at 3:00.
