Twenty-One Named to MASCAC Spring Academic Honor RollMonday, June 8, 2009 ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation spring Academic Honor Roll, which notes academic excellence by student-athletes, contains 442 honorees as announced by Executive Director Ken Andrews.
The Honor Roll comprises those student-athletes of sophomore class standing or higher who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) or higher and completed the playing season in good standing.
Messiah led in selections with 70 student-athletes, followed by Elizabethtown with 49. Misericordia and King’s tied for third with 39 student-athletes. Lebanon Valley was fifth with 38, while Manhattanville, Widener and Eastern tied for sixth with 32 student-athletes on the list. Lycoming was ninth with 29 student-athletes. Arcadia and FDU-Florham tied for tenth with 25. DeSales and Wilkes each had 24, followed by Albright (21), Delaware Valley (20) and Alvernia (13).
Featured on the spring honor roll are several standouts including First Team All-Conference selections Jason Dunkelberger (Baseball), and Lisa Archibald (Women’s Tennis). Also featured on this year’s list was Second Team All-Conference selection Marissa Cooperman (Women’s Tennis).
Student-athletes are selected from baseball, softball, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and golf.
Click here for Albright honorees Click here for all honorees | Callahan Earns Third Win of the Year against DeSalesThursday, April 23, 2009 CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - In the Lions’ final match of the 2009 season, freshman team member Michael Callahan (Lake Ariel, PA/Western Wayne) picked up his third win of the year in the 8-1 loss to DeSales University, Thursday afternoon. With the loss, Albright’s 2009 record fell to 0-10. DeSales’ record improved to 3-11 with Wednesday’s win. To start the afternoon off Lee Fura (Reading, PA/Holy Name) once again had another strong showing at first singles. Despite a tough 6-0 second set loss, Fura battled back and forth in the first set dropping a 6-4 decision. From there DeSales picked up three more singles victories, before Callahan was able to end their streak at fifth singles. Callahan proved dominant in his match against Timothy Golden. The Lake Ariel, Pa. native recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory. On the year the freshman standout was 3-4 at fifth singles. Moving into doubles action, the host Bulldogs swept all three matches in decisive fashion to secure the 8-1 victory. Wednesday’s match marked the final match in the careers of two senior members, Dan Martin (Farmingdale, NJ/St. Rose) and Kevin Gauby (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley). Kevin Wong/Adam Stamm (AC) 97-0 | Lycoming Sneaks by Men’s Tennis in Conference FinaleWednesday, April 22, 2009 READING, Pa. - In what turned out to be their closest match of the season, the Lions despite their best efforts were unable to pull out the conference win against the Warriors of Lycoming College Wednesday afternoon. Lycoming defeated Albright by the final score of 5-3.
With Wednesday’s loss the Lions record tell to 0-9 on the season and 0-5 in the conference. Lycoming improved their record to 3-6, and 1-4 in the Commonwealth. In singles action, the red and white’s Lee Fura (Reading, PA/Holy Name) played a very close match against the Warriors Robert Brown. Brown went onto earn the victory to put Lycoming up 1-0. The Warriors then earned their second point of the afternoon following a decisive second singles victory. Jason Lefkoe (Holland, PA/Council Rock HS South) recorded the Lions first singles victory, which was then followed up with a fifth singles win by Mike Callahan (Lake Ariel, PA/Western Wayne). Callahan dominated his opponent defeating him by the final scores of 6-0, and 6-1. Moving into doubles competition, Lycoming picked up back-to-back victories to secure the win. The third doubles match and sixth singles match were not played due to weather. The Lions will close out their 2009 campaign on Thursday when they travel to DeSales University for a non-conference match, which is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Lycoming College 5, Albright College 3 Box Score Singles 1.
