Albright College Honored on Regional 'Best Of' Lists

Aug. 11, 2014

Reading, Pa. – Albright College has been named one of the top colleges in the Northeast, and one of the top fashion design and top fashion merchandising schools on the East Coast.

The Princeton Review, an education services company known for its test prep and college guides, named Albright as one of the 225 "Best Northeastern" colleges, part of its online feature “2015 Best Colleges: Region by Region.” The Princeton Review assesses schools for academic excellence, compiling the list based on student surveys, data collected through its administrator surveys, and the opinions of its staff and of counselor advisers.

Albright has been named one of the best colleges in the Northeast since 2004.

The 2015 list recognized Albright for its commitment to interdisciplinary education, small classes, discussion-based learning and high level of student involvement. One Albright student surveyed said the College's "academic approach attracts students who 'value being unique and following your own path. We are able to fit together, because we respect and reward individuality.'"

Albright students also lauded the College for its great facilities and ongoing efforts to improve campus buildings. This includes the recently renovated Science Center and the new John K. Roessner III ’61 Hall: The Center for Business and Civic Leadership at Albright College, set to open this fall.

Gregory Eichhorn, Albright's vice president of enrollment management and dean of admission, said, "This recognition validates Albright's continued commitment to a liberal arts curriculum and experiential learning opportunities that prepare our graduates for an ever-changing job market."

In total, The Princeton Review recognized 646 colleges and universities in four regions, representing just 25 percent of the nation’s approximately 2,500 four-year colleges. The Northeast region stretches from Maine to Maryland. Schools in the Region by Region feature are not ranked.

This past spring, Albright was named one of the top 20 fashion design schools and one of the top 15 fashion merchandising schools on the East Coast, according to Fashion-Schools.org.

The website, which provides resources for students seeking information on fashion schools, ranked Albright No. 11 for fashion merchandising and No. 17 for fashion design on the East Coast, which is defined as the region stretching from Maine to Virginia.

Fashion-Schools.org cited Albright for its unique programs, variety of tracks of study to pursue, including Merchandising, Design & Merchandising, Fashion Design and Costume Design, and program highlights that include the Fashion Department’s annual fashion showcase; opportunities to contribute to Albright’s fashion publication, Fashion Lion; and “the very successful Fashion & Costume Internship program.”

Albright students have interned for Anna Sui, Anthropologie, Donna Karan, Gucci, Isaac Mizrahi, Marie Claire, Michael Kors, QVC, Troika Entertainment and the Totem Pole Playhouse and have worked seasonally at the Utah Shakespeare Festival Co. Students also have the opportunity to visit such fashion meccas as New York, Paris, London and Florence.

Fashion department chair Doreen Burdalski said Albright’s ranking on the East Coast list is a great honor, especially in a region known for its fashion prowess. The ranking, she said, is a testament to the strength of the fashion program, which is set apart by its great internship and experiential opportunities, small class size, and individualized attention and mentorship from faculty with decades of industry experience.

“Our fashion students also benefit tremendously from the College’s deep-rooted liberal arts tradition, as they are exposed to various disciplines and are encouraged to combine their fashion interests with other fields of study, such as communications in the pursuit of a career in fashion media,” said Burdalski.

Fashion-Schools.org’s 2014 rankings considered hundreds of schools in the United States that offer programs geared toward fashion design, fashion merchandising, fashion marketing, retailing and related degrees. The criteria for ranking included academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program and faculty, value as it relates to tuition and indebtedness, and geographic location. Rankings were based on school surveys and other publically available information.

This is the second time in as many years that Albright has been honored by Fashion-Schools.org. In 2013, the first year the website produced these lists, Albright ranked No. 18 for fashion schools in the East.

Founded in 1856, Albright College is a selective, national liberal arts college enrolling 1,700 full-time undergraduates and more than 800 adult learners and graduate students. The College’s flexible interdisciplinary curriculum, strengthened by a close-knit residential learning environment, encourages students to combine majors and disciplines to create individualized academic programs. Close faculty mentorship, numerous experiential learning options, and a diverse, supportive community of scholars and learners help students exceed their own expectations and graduate with a commitment to a lifetime of service and learning. Albright College is located in Reading, Pennsylvania.
