After several tragedies occurred on college campuses around the Country, many continue to ask,"Is Albright a safe place to visit, live, learn, and work?" The Director's response has been, "We are as safe as any other college or university in the Country. And, in many ways, we are safer because of several initiatives that we have in place." They include:
- The Public Safety Department consists of sixteen full-time Officers and ten Auxiliary Officers. All Officers receive CPR, 1st Aid, and AED training and required recertification.
- Six of the sixteen Officers, are Sworn Police Officers, through the Berks County Court of Common Pleas, having full arrest powers.
- Six of the officers are prior police offices with many years of experience in law enforcement.
- The Department provides a shuttle service for students throughout the day and an escort service during the hours of darkness.
- Emergency telephones are strategically located around the campus giving immediate access to the Public Safety Department.
- The campus has initiated a text messaging system which is provided to the Albright Community. After signing on to this system, emergency messages can be received within minutes of being sent by the Director. A description of the incident, along with directions for ensuring safety will be provided.
- The Public Safety Department and the Health Center provide a self-defense class for women on campus who are interested in enrolling.
- All Residence Halls are Identification Card Access and remained locked at all times.
- Public Safety Officers make periodic rounds through all residence halls.
- A comprehensive Emergency Response Plan has been prepared and is reviewed and revised regularly. Officers regularly train for various emergency responses that could occur on campus.
- In the summer of 2007, the Public Safety Department joined with the Reading Police Department to train for a hostile situation in one of the residence halls. This training, the first of its kind in a Berks County College, gave insight to both Departments, while providing a valuable training opportunity to all participants.
- The Reading Police Department and the Muhlenberg Township Police Department provide routine patrols in and around the Albright Campus.
- The Public Safety Department enjoys an excellent working relationship with both police departments who respond quickly should assistance be needed.
- Every year, members of the Public Safety Department, along with Faculty, Staff, Students, and Administrators, walk the entire campus to look for possible areas of vulnerability. If something is identified as a concern, immediate steps are taken to eliminate the concern.
